On Thursday, April 22, 1999 (1-5 PM) at the Beckman
Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Artificial
Neural Networks & Computational Brain Theory Group (ANNCBT) and
the Illinois Working Group on
Genetic and Evolutionary Computation (IWGGEC) held their first joint
workshop:
Organizing Committee
David
Goldberg, Department of General Engineering
(deg(AT)uiuc.edu)
Sylvian Ray,
Department
of Computer Science (ray(AT)cs.uiuc.edu)
William Hsu, National
Center for Supercomputing Applications (bhsu(AT)ncsa.uiuc.edu)
Jesse Reichler,
Department
of Computer Science (reichler(AT)cs.uiuc.edu)
Clay Holroyd,
Neuroscience
Program (holroyd(AT)uiuc.edu)
Format
The basic format of the workshop was a half-day of presentations with
two coffee breaks, and an informal poster area. Our intention was
to accommodate a diversity of subjects and presentation styles. Talks ranged
from three-minute summaries of work in progress to ten minute formal presentations,
including several software and hardware demonstrations.
The complete list
of registered attendees included 77 people. Attendance was approximately
80 people.
The workshop
program, full
schedule of talks, and abstracts
for oral presentations are now available.
Participation
The purpose of the joint workshop was to open a dialogue among researchers
at the UIUC working on different aspects of non-traditional, adaptive computation.
We therefore strongly encouraged all ANNCBT and IWGGEC affiliates, as well
as non-affiliates working in related areas, to prepare at least some minimal,
informal presentation of their current research work and/or future plans
(including speculation and wild hypotheses).
Representative topics include neural networks, computational neuroscience, cognitive models, genetic and evolutionary computation, intelligent agents, distributed AI, probabilistic reasoning, fuzzy logic, ordinal computing, non-traditional control and optimization, and hybrid models.
Presenters were asked to submit a brief abstract (25-500 words), and specify the desired length of the talk (between 2 and 45 minutes), indicating whether a poster will accompany the material. Submission of multiple abstracts was welcomed.

Presentation
If you would like to present something
at the workshop, please check all those that apply.
| I would like to present a poster | |
| I would like to present a short (2-10 minute) synopsis of recent or current research | |
| I would like to present a short (2-10 minute) software/hardware demonstration | |
| I would like to present a longer formal presentation (approximate length ) |
We are asking that presenters submit
a title and abstract for each presentation.
You may provide these here, or e-mail
them later to jointworkshop(AT)ncsa.uiuc.edu.
(Multiple submissions are encouraged;
please be sure to annotate each title and abstract with the intended presentation
format.)
