KDD New User FAQ
Welcome to Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD)! If you
run into any difficulties using your KDD accounts or the
KDD resources please consult this guide first. We have
also given some contact information, so please see the
appropiate section to find out to whom one should send
requests and general inqueries.
All KDD members should have a key to both N227 and N124.
If you don't have a key to both of those rooms and you
have not been issued a key card you need to talk to
Dr. Hsu.
Once your key has been requested you need to goto the
CIS office N234 and get the keycard then you will take
the keycard over to Dykstra hall to pick up your key.
The entire process should take just a few days.
When you come to K-State you should be given a CNS login
username and password (user@ksu.edu). If you are a CIS
major you will also get a CIS username and password
(user@cis.ksu.edu). The KDD does not administer your CNS
or CIS accounts. If you need help with CNS or CIS accounts
go to these two addresses,
http://www.ksu.edu/cns/forms/
and
http://www.cis.ksu.edu/Systems/csystems.html.
The administrators at the KDD will give you accounts for
systems
in the KDD Lab. To get the account you must first get approval from
Dr. William Hsu.
Then send e-mail to
admin(AT)www.kddresearch.org with your full name your CNS and
CIS login names and two preferred login names for the KDD systems.
The administrators at the KDD will send you email when your account
is created with a temporary password. You will need to change your
password asap.
In addition, KDD members may be given accounts on the
NCSA Systems. In
order for the KDD administrators to process your application
we must have your Social Security Number and a list of three
preferred login names. Please tell us in person or via e-mail
at
admin(AT)www.kddresearch.org.
If you have found a KDD computer you can sit down and
login like normal. KDD systems are very unique, though.
They are dual boot which means they can boot into two
different operation systems. We mostly use Windows and
Linux at the KDD. If you login to Windows you must use
your CIS username and if you want to use linux you must
use your KDD username.
All KDD systems are remotely accessible if they are running
linux. The preferred way to access a remote system is by
ssh. Ssh is available on
all KDD system and should be on most K-State systems. If you
need to move files between two systems you may use
scp. Telnet and ftp are frowned
upon because they are insecure programs. Security at the
KDD is an important practice.
You must change your password on fingolfin only. From
there your password will propagate to every other KDD
system. If you change your password on another system
first it will be changed back automatically.
First, login to fingolfin as described in the
login tutorial.
Then run the command passwd -l.
The screen will prompt you for your old password and wait
for you to type it. Then you will be asked for your new
password twice. That's it. The change takes effect instanly
on fingolfin and takes about an hour or two to propogate to
the other systems.
Once your username has been added to the KDD systems
you will have many new email addresses. The main one
will be on the web/mail server ringil. Your address
on ringil will be user@ringil.cis.ksu.edu or
user@www.kddresearch.org. Both addresses are exactly
the same. On all other systems your email will be
user@system.user.cis.ksu.edu.
If you want to forward your email to another address
you can make a file in your home directory named .forward
(don't forget the leading .) and type the address you want
all your mail to forward to. Yes it is that simple.
All KDD members should e-mail their schedules to the system
administrators each semester. We will then make an excel
schedule and post it to the web. To view the current schedule
