About KDD Research Lab

The Laboratory for Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) is a research group in the Computing and Information Sciences (CIS) Department at Kansas State University. Its research emphasis is in the areas of applied artificial intelligence (AI) and knowledge-based software engineering (KBSE) for decision support systems. Subjects include machine learning, data mining and knowledge discovery from large spatial and temporal databases, human-computer intelligent interaction (HCII), and high-performance computation in learning and optimization.

About the role:

The KDD Research Lab is seeking a part-time desktop and server system administrator for lab computers and servers. This position is open for both undergraduate and graduate students.

System administrators will work with the Computer Science (CS) Information Technology (IT) team to install, configure, and maintain both Windows and Linux operating systems. The role includes server-side operations and troubleshooting tasks to support research and development activities, as well as short term development duties on KDD systems such as the Wiki. This role places a high emphasis on cybersecurity.

Responsibilities

  • Work with developers and researchers to support their duties.
  • Oversee the development of both desktop and server infrastructure systems.
  • Lead the development and implementation of cybersecurity procedures throughout the Lab.
  • Develop software systems on a short term basis.

Qualifications

  • Software engineering and development background.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in the Windows operating system.
  • High levels of reading and writing comprehension.

Strong candidates may also:

  • Have experience with Docker deployments.
  • Be proficient with programming languages, such as Python and JavaScript.
  • Have a background in Linux server setup, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Possess knowledge with cloud hosting (AWS, Azure, Vercel, etc…), and web frameworks (React, NextJS, etc…).
  • Have security and privacy best practice expertise.

Compensation

  • Compensation begins at $14 per hour, with a maximum of 20 hours per week.
  • Increases begin after 1-2 semesters, given satisfactory performance.

Tentative start date: October 1st.
